Placing a Child for Adoption

Placing a Child for Adoption

We are available 24 hours a day at 800-222-5859.

Adoption is a mature, loving decision when you feel that you are not in a position to parent. Catholic Charities offers free, supportive counseling to help you look at your options. We will not pressure you or make a decision for you, but will answer your questions, help you look at resources for both parenting and adoption, and offer support so that you can make the decision you believe is best for your child.

Open adoption is a very common choice that offers the opportunity to have an ongoing relationship with your child and their parents. Open adoption can mean anything from receiving letters and pictures throughout the years, to sharing identifying information and getting together with your child and the adoptive family for visits. Your social worker can help you set up a plan for the type of openness you are comfortable with.

We have a number of approved adoptive families. All adoptive families go through a home study process including background checks, references, education and interviews. You can choose an adoptive family for your child by viewing profiles, reading their home study, and/or meeting with the couple before making a decision.

When you first meet with us, we will collect some basic information from you and discuss your wishes for your baby. We will explain the adoption process, legal aspects of adoption, openness, and parenting resources. You will be asked to complete some Social and Medical History paperwork and we will help you to create a hospital plan, meet and select an adoptive family, and create an openness agreement with the family. You can sign adoption consents no sooner than 72 hours after the baby is born. Catholic Charities will continue to be available for support long after you have placed your baby for adoption.

Each adoption plan is different and is designed to meet your needs. You can start your adoption plan at any point during your pregnancy or after the birth of your child.

You can view adoptive family profiles here.
