Volunteering at the Overnight Shelter
Overnight Shelter Volunteers
Overnight Shelter Volunteers – Rochester
At the heart of our Rochester Overnight Shelter is a deep commitment to honoring the dignity of every person we serve. Volunteers play an essential role in creating a welcoming, compassionate environment—offering a sense of community that cannot be replaced.
Volunteer opportunities vary and allow individuals to support guests in meaningful, hands-on ways throughout the evening and morning.
Volunteer Shift Opportunities:
Check-In Help – Evenings daily 7:30 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.
In this role, volunteers play an instrumental part in preparing the shelter for opening. Volunteers assist guests with check-in, help secure their belongings, and offer support as they get settled for the evening. This may include helping guests with laundry, providing toiletries for showers, or simply offering a welcoming presence. Volunteers may also assist with serving dinner and completing light cleaning in the kitchen area.
Exit Help – Mornings daily 6:00 a.m. – 8:30 a.m.
Morning volunteers help staff prepare the kitchen area for breakfast by setting up cold cereal, instant oatmeal, and coffee. Volunteers also assist in creating a smooth and respectful start to the day as guests prepare to leave the shelter.

Because the Overnight Shelter serves a vulnerable adult population, all volunteers are required to complete and pass a background check prior to serving.
